Meet Our Interns

Arturo Fernandez, MVZ

Dr. Fernandez is originally from Mexico City. He was very close to his grandfather who was a great enthusiast of nature and country life, which led him to become interested in horses. He graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the same year he completed an internship at a ranch specialized in equine reproduction and neonatology with more than 160 horses. His fields of greatest interests are surgery and lameness and he hopes next year to be accepted to start his residency in surgery. In his free time, Dr. Fernandez likes to do calisthenics, hiking, play soccer with his friends, and would never turn down a game of chess. Arturo has joined our MPEH team for the 2023-2024 internship.

Lauren Smallwood, DVM

Dr. Smallwood was born and raised in East Tennessee. She started riding horses at a young age and competed in hunter jumper. She adopted a rescue Tennessee walking horse who caused her to fall in love with equine medicine. Dr. Smallwood graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2023 with an interest in equine ambulatory and internal medicine. In her free time she enjoys hiking with her dog Dharma, kayaking, and spending time with her now retired horse, Hotch, and cat Cassie. She can’t wait to enjoy what Washington has to offer. Dr. Smallwood has joined our MPEH team for the 2023-2024 internship.
